Unity Ceremonies - The Trends

If you have read our last article about Traditional Unity Ceremonies, you know a bit about the history of unity ceremonies and where they come from. Some nearlyweds would rather take a little more non-traditional approach to the unity ceremony, make it less religious or have it incorporate more family members, or just be more fun!

Drink Blending

For the couples that love a good bev, there's always drink blending. You each choose two different - yet compatible - wines, and pour them into a glass to create a perfect blend, and then drink the blend together. This can also be done with beer, or it can be done with tea for a dry wedding or if you are a lover of herbal blends!

Extra Non-Traditional Tip!

make your favorite cocktail together and have the first drink of the party together during the ceremony!

Anniversary Capsule

More sentimental couples may want to opt into the Anniversary Capsule! This can be done during the wedding ceremony or throughout the wedding where guests can be a part of the day. Ask your guests to write a note for you and your partner to read on your first, fifth, tenth or whatever anniversary! These notes go into your time capsule, as well as a letter to your new spouse, Polaroid photos from the day of, a bottle of wine, ticket stubs from dates, or any other keepsakes. Similarly, there is an existing tradition to seal away a box of wine for your first fight, or an anniversary.

Planting Ceremony

If you are having a garden-inspired wedding or if you both enjoy nature, you may love this next one. A tree planting ceremony is a great way to bring your love for all things outdoors into the rest of your lives. Pick out a beautiful piece of pottery your fruit tree - or something else personally significant and lives to an old age - can live in for a while, and mix together some soils, maybe from your hometown. As your love flourishes, so will your new plant!

Food Ceremony

Make a food together! This one can be extra non-traditional, make a sandwich, get a molcajete and make guacamole together, the possibilities are endless!

Bonfire Lighting

Maybe a candle is not daring enough for you? Having an outdoor wedding especially on a campground or on private land often gives you the freedom to - as the saying goes, go big or go home. The designated fire pit is ready to go when you have your ceremony, and together, you and your partner can throw the starting flame - then your guests can roast marshmallows and enjoy smores over the raging fire of your love.

Ring Warming Ceremony

Intimate ceremonies or micro-weddings may work best for the ring warming ceremony. The nearlyweds rings are passed around in their ring boxes, each guest getting the chance to hold and instill well wishes on them or giving them silent prayers.

Extra Non-Traditional Tip!

Nothing says “forever” like a tattoo artist at your wedding to create your forever wedding band right there at your celebration!

Paint Blending

A simple and creative take on the sand ceremony is Paint Blending! Similar to the sand ceremony, you and your partner each choose a color of paint - either based on your wedding colors, your favorite colors, home decor etc. - then pour or splatter it onto a canvas to create a one of a kind piece! Your blended treasure can be displayed in your home or gifted to children. You can even use this as your guest book by having your guests sign it once the paint is dry!
